In classrooms from Kerikeri to Invercargill, a quiet revolution is taking place. It isn’t defined by the latest gadget, but by a fundamental shift in how ākonga connect with the world. As schools grapple with student engagement and the evolving NZ Curriculum, a critical question has emerged for leadership: How do we generate greater engagement and interest in core curriculum subjects?
For many students, traditional settings can mask their true potential. Immersive technology is proving to be the key that unlocks that door, turning abstract lessons into “lived experiences.”
The South Auckland experience:
Mana-enhancing learning
At Papakura High School, the implementation of Mindflight7’s Virtual Reality programmes has been a deliberate, values-driven decision. “Mindflight7 has shown us that when learning is immersive and connected, ākonga who are often quiet or hesitant step forward with mana, curiosity, and voice,” says Anusha Nirene Soupen, Director of STEAM.
This impact isn’t fleeting. Mrs Soupen notes that ākonga continue to reference these experiences, participating in subsequent lessons with a newfound confidence and a strengthened identity as learners.
Equity of access: Serving the whole of Aotearoa
A common challenge in New Zealand education is the geographic “digital divide.” Mindflight7 is intentionally disrupting this trend. By operating a mobile, “plug-and-play” model that requires zero school Wi-Fi and zero internal IT support, we deliver the same high-calibre experiences to regional schools in Northland and Southland as we do in central Auckland. This ensures that every student, regardless of their postcode, is empowered with the learning and achievement needed to secure their seat at the table of the future.
The roadmap: A strategy for success
Steve Lawrence, Managing Director of Mindflight7 NZ, believes partnering with schools is the key to success. “We believe strongly in a ‘step-change’ strategy,” says Steve. “This moves from initial pilot incursions aligned to the Curriculum or Career tasters, toward a structured term-by-term ‘Annual Pass’ where students and teachers gain the full benefit of immersive education without the capital outlay.”
By providing the headsets, content, and onsite Teacher Professional Development, Mindflight7 removes the technical barriers to entry. “This structured phase ensures that by the time a school launches its permanent XR Lab, staff and students are already inspired and the investment is backed by a proven track record of pedagogical success,” Steve adds.
The future is immersive
By moving beyond simple demonstrations toward full curriculum integration, we aren’t just showing ākonga the future – we are actively empowering them with the practical tools they need to build it.
